The new rules. We believe in…

paying attention to the most sweeping transformation in the modern history of communications. This revolution, driven by technology, is quickly modifying how we consume news, information and entertainment. It is altering how we live our lives and reordering the structures of business and power around the world.

innovation. The only way to remain relevant is to change, reinvent and think outside the box. If you don’t do it, others will do it for you.

niches. The mass market is dying. The new times call for specializing and excelling in a niche or set of niches. Small is the new big.

speed. Being nimble is necessary to succeeding in today’s world. You can then adjust and make improvements as you go.

collaboration. Sharing knowledge and collaborating to solve problems is a better business practice than controlling. Work to embrace Open Source (share knowledge) and crowdsourcing.

the power of people. The public, not the big corporations, is now in charge. Listen to what people have to say to develop the products and services it needs.

networks. It’s more productive to share information and add value by using online tools to connect to the communities we like, than relying on isolated and closed systems.

transparency. The architecture of the web promotes transparency, being clear about what you do and how you do it. Secrecy does not work.

consumption. People born after 1980 (digital immigrants) engage with information in ways radically different from those born before that year (digital natives).

Abundance. We live in a market ruled by abundance of information (millions of sites), not the scarcity associated with monopolies and controlling institutions of the past.

Future of news. We believe that…

journalism is evolving and won’t vanish. Human judgment is vital and someone qualified needs to curate and organize the information. Right, journalists no longer have a monopoly on news and information.

quality is indispensable. You should produce exclusive, credible content and become the best in your niche. Excellence and uniqueness matter a great deal.

link journalism is the essence of the Internet. Linking to quality posts produced by others is the equivalent of recommending an article to someone. It’s a transparent and healthy practice.

aggregation is vital. Given the high volume of information on the Web, people and technology should filter, organize and aggregation information on the Internet.

you should take advantage of interactivity. Web and mobile platforms allow for instant communication between people. Success lies on connecting with communities.

multimedia journalism is powerful. Web and mobile platforms integrate all available formats –text, audio, video, images- like no other media. You should master multimedia storytelling.

journalists should develop their online skills. Producing, publishing and aggregating quality, interactive content requires mastering new skills and embracing technology.

specialization is crucial. Journalists and media organizations specialized in well defined topics or geographic regions will succeed.

investigative journalism is more important than ever and that it ought to rely on database and online communities reporting.
